They say that you are only as strong as your weakest member. However, many workforces know that they are only as capable of success as their leader. If you have someone in charge who is not capable of leading you to the promise land, then you are doomed to failure. A leader should be someone who is inspiring and motivating. Many of us are well aware of the redeeming qualities of great leaders such as creativity and confidence. It is also just as important to recognize the qualities of a bad leader so that you can act accordingly. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the worst qualities that poor leaders demonstrate.


Poor Integrity

One of the best quotes related to leadership is, “Integrity is the most valuable and respected quality of leadership. Always keep your word.” You can have someone who is very intelligent and effective as a leader, but if they lack that moral integrity, it is sure to spell trouble down the road. Employees look to their leader to be the example of what acceptable behavior looks like. So, if a leader is demonstrating unethical behavior, it is only a matter of time until they begin engaging in such actions as well. A lack of moral integrity should always be a red flag because it almost always leads to someone’s undoing.


Unable To Adapt

The best leaders are capable of displaying an unlimited range of leadership styles depending on the situation at hand. Not all employees will be motivated by the same tactics, and no one-size-fits-all” method will work for every situation. Poor leaders are unaware of this and may stay stuck in their ways, unwilling to adapt to what the situation requires. These people tend to have a “my way or the highway” mindset and are slow to make the necessary adjustments. Leaders that show an inability to adapt will also be unable to come up with innovative and creative ideas that can set the company apart from its contemporaries. Our world is ever evolving, and in order to survive, you must be able to change with the times.


Poor Communication

Great communication is another one of the most important skills for a leader to have. No matter how effective the plan drawn up seems, they must be able to communicate this plan to the rest of team in a way that is understandable and motivates them to achieve the set goals. If a leader is unable to communicate their vision adequately, then little progress will be made as they will be unable to “rally the troops” and get them prepared to handle the tasks at hand.

Communication is also a two-way street. So, not only should a great leader be able to speak clearly and effectively, but they should also be able to listen intently. Employees want to feel heard and valued, and as a leader, you should be able to create that kind of environment. Poor leaders fail to listen to their employees and stick only with their ideas, neglecting those of everyone else around them.
